Shipping A Car – What to Expect at Pickup and Delivery
Reducing the uncertainty of your shipping experience is one of the hallmarks of our service. Our advisors answer customers’ most frequently asked questions about pickup and delivery of your vehicle during transport:
What can I put in my car?
This is a common request when customers are shipping a car south for the winter, relocating or moving to college. While it is tempting to use the car as a container for shipping items to your destination, we strongly advise against having any personal belongings in the vehicle while shipping a car. Although most carriers allow items in the trunk totaling less than 100 lbs, insurance companies do not cover the contents in the car, only the car itself is covered. So, we advise customers to leave the car empty during transport. If you decide there are a few items you’d like to pack in the trunk, it is recommended to limit it to clothing, linens, and items that are not of value.
Will the driver pick up the car at my location?
We offer door-to-door service. If there are logistical reasons the truck cannot navigate to your street or driveway, the carrier will coordinate to meet at a nearby location, typically a plaza or large parking lot. The driver will call you in advance to give an estimated time for arrival and will typically call again to confirm the exact delivery time. Someone must be present to inspect and sign at both pickup and delivery.
How does the inspection happen?
We always coach our customers to carefully review the car with the driver as they inspect the vehicle and document the condition. The standard document used, called the ‘Bill of Lading’, is similar to renting a car. It shows a silhouette of the car and allows for an indication of any damage identified. Be sure to review the entire vehicle with the carrier. Document any existing damage. Understand and approve all notes on this form before signing and be sure to obtain a copy of the form before the carrier leaves.
At delivery, take a good look at the entire vehicle once again. Inspect for any new damage and review against your original pickup document. If the damage is found, be sure to note it on the Bill of Lading and call your Beacon contact immediately. It is very important to understand that once you sign off on the form, both you and the driver agree to the delivery condition. Any damage discovered after delivery is very difficult to prove and claim.
